We went 99 days without receiving measurable precipitation here in Lubbock and now we have more in the forecast. Coverage of this precipitation is going to be low, so not a ton will be affected. There is a strong cold front coming into the region this evening. That front will bring in very cold air and enough moisture to spark a light mix of sleet and freezing rain in the Rolling Plains tomorrow. There will be very light accumulations in that part of the area, so slick spots are possible Wednesday morning.
For Lubbock, We're looking at more of a sleet event. But, accumulations will be light, if we even see any. The ground has been very warm as of late, because of highs in the mid and upper 70s. So, that is going to help keep the problems down. Now, since the air is going to remain below freezing all day, there will be light accumulations. So, just be careful driving, especially if you're headed to the east. The Rolling Plains will see icy spots on some roads.
Moving into Thursday, it's looking like we'll get leftover freezing rain in the Rolling Plains, So, as you head to work and school east of I-27 and eats of Lubbock, be careful for slick spots on roads. For Lubbock, we're looking at more of a light rain event. The activity will move east of Lubbock by lunch time Thursday. So, we will not see many problems in Lubbock from this system. The picture above is the forecast for tomorrow from 9:00 am-3:00 pm. Remember, coverage won't be as much as what is depicted in the photo. The photo below is the forecast for 6:00 am-noon on Thursday. Have your winter coats and umbrellas ready top go and be sure to watch for ice.
